Join the Plastic Revolution: Transforming Waste, Inspiring the Future
Pupils from South Wilford Primary School, preparing for to fill their new planter for Spring.
In the heart of Nottingham, a revolution is taking place - one that transforms plastic waste into opportunity, challenges perceptions, and inspires young minds. Welcome to the Plastic Revolution Schools Challenge, led by Future Makers in collaboration with South Wilford Endowed C of E Primary School.
This groundbreaking initiative combines creativity, community, and innovation to tackle a problem every business faces: what to do with waste plastic. We’re inviting businesses in Nottingham with big Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) ambitions, to partner with us in creating real change!
An Educational Journey
Here’s how the challenge unfolded:
A launch assembly for over 300 pupils and teachers, introducing the possibilities of transforming plastic waste into valuable creations.
20kg of plastic waste was collected over 6 weeks by pupils, parents, and teachers, bringing the school community together to take action.
A collection point, designed in our Nottingham studio, was built using 100% recycled plastic panels and transport bags featuring vibrant graffiti art by the talented Talia - celebrating the value of plastic.
Using his Corporate Volunteer Day, Paul Barker, Government Property Agency, cleaned, shredded, and helped to transform the plastic waste into stunning Frosted Confetti sheet material.
Our workshop technician, Janis Zube, crafted a beautiful planter from this recycled material.
Changing Perceptions on Plastic Waste
This week, we returned to unveil the planter in a celebration assembly. Together with the children, we filled it with plants to bloom in spring, creating a thriving habitat for wildlife while celebrating the school’s contribution to sustainability.
“This project has given our pupils hands-on experience of recycling and creativity. It’s been inspiring to see how waste can become something so beautiful and useful.”
Mrs. Aldridge, Head Teacher, South Wilford Primary School“I thought plastic was something you could just throw in the bin, kind of useless. I learned that you can make anything out of it. You can shred it and make artwork, furniture and useful things”.
Year 4 pupil.“I thought plastic is just a daily thing that you use. I didn’t think much about it. I learned about the different types of plastic and what they are used for. Since we had a bin at school I brought some plastic from home to recycle.”
Year 6 pupil
Natalie Aldridge, Headteacher at South Wilford Primary School with pupils and Tristan Hessing, Director at Future Makers.
Tristan Hessing, Director at Future Makers said "The Plastic Revolution Schools Challenge showcases the incredible potential of waste plastic. By partnering with schools and businesses, we can change perceptions to enable positive change, empower communities and create a lasting impact on the environment."
